About Me

My photo
Grieverjoe (Jose Alvarez) is NOT a whiny emo as his name would suggest. He's an IT student with a love for art.

Kevin Chen studies, 1

Since I'm trying to lean more towards a stylized-realism style, I figured I should study Kevin Chen, since his figure drawings and face renderings are nothing short of awesome.
For reference, this is what I was trying to emulate.
Need more practice.

Loomis studies 2

Mannequin skeletons this time. Trying to get a sense of action.
The two big ones and the two to the right of those are taken from Loomis' books. All the other ones are drawn from imagination.

Loomis studies 1

In order to get better, I have to reteach myself how to draw, basically. So, what better way than to learn from the master himself, Andrew Loomis?
I'll be studying his books for a bit before I decide to do another 'big' piece, so you'll probably see more of these in the future.
Besides, an artist never stops learning.

Blending exercises

Just a quick little blending exercise I got from ctrl+Paint before bed.
Got my last final tomorrow!

Posture sketches

Haven't posted anything in a hot minute. Art block and whatnot. Plus, I gotta get ready for finals coming up.

The fine folks over at Posemaniacs have this nifty 30-second-pose app. I decided to give it a shot and found it fun as hell. Informative, too.
They're done in pencil on printer paper (except the third one. I drew that on my old high school sketchbook, hence the dark part, there.)

Adult Content?

Those of you seeing this post have no doubt noticed that there is now a content warning before you get to the sweet sweet artwork within.
Though there are no boobies (yet) on display, I had to add the content since the pinups I've shown in sketch form (which I do plan on refining) are considered "Mature" content. I understand why this is so: you probably wouldn't be showing those to your kids (and if you are, awesome. Spread the word!)
No worries, though: this site will never degenerate past the tasteful nudity and occasional tease (that's what the internet is for, after all!)
All that said, on with the show.
Here's my progress on my latest drawing. Gambit.

PROGRESS

After all, I decided that the anatomy was all jacked up, so I fixed it (I hope). But still, PROGRESS!

Spiderman progress

Been studying muscle groups (FINALLY!) to try and give a slight sense of realism. Let's see how it turns out.
I'm still not entirely sold on the right leg.

Spiderman, WIP

Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na, SPIDERMAN! SPIDERMAN!
Decided I'd try my hand at crazy foreshortening.

Wolverine, sketching

Sketchy sketchy. I think I like the legs pulled closer better.

Wolverine, more better!

After looking at the previous Wolverine pic, I decided it wasn't Wolverine enough. SO, in an effort to Wolverine-it-up a bit, I decided to try a picture that had a more Wolverine feel to it.
So, here's Wolverine more better! Now with more Wolverine, or your money back!
Can't you just imagine him leaping through the air, going, "Wheee!" in a murderous rage?
I can.

Gambit, WIP1

This will be my sister-in-law's Christmas/birthday gift.
She loves Gambit, for some reason, and she's 10.

More sketches

More gesture drawings; a doodle of Venom with a Sharpie, and my rendition of Adam Hughes' Powergirl. I've been studying his style, because I really like his relaxed-realism style and I want to be able to incorporate some of it into my own art.

I have a brain, you know...

Someone suggested I stop drawing mens and get back to curvy ladies, since that's my calling, as they put it.
Well, here ya go.
Tip of the hat to the awesome Adam Hughes.

Just a couple gesture drawings before bed. About 10 minutes total. Gotta keep mah shit QUICK!

Five Minutes Alone!

I drew these a few months back. I set myself a limit of five minutes and no more on each piece. Pretty fun. I might try this again later.
Yes, I know Wolverine looks like a troll, leave me alone.

Kathy, WIP 2

I haven't been slacking off. Promise! To prove it, have a WIP.
I forgot to post the part where I show the flats like in my previous posts, so this time, you get some flats and some rendering.
Yea.

Kathy, round two

After being pointed out that Kathy was, in fact, standing in a pose very similar to Jord's, it became clear to me that I would have to change the pose. So, after running a few ideas by Kathy, she settled for this more dynamic, less Jord-like pose.
Here's the initial sketch.
