About Me

My photo
Grieverjoe (Jose Alvarez) is NOT a whiny emo as his name would suggest. He's an IT student with a love for art.

Liam Cunningham

Decided to break out the pencil and sketchbook for this one.
Liam Cunningham, about 1.5 hours total. Reference used: http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMjEyMDM0NzQ5NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDkyODQyNw@@._V1_SX640_SY720_.jpg
Did you guys know he totally looks like Davos Seaworth? Huh...

20151101

I think I had an epiphany as far as hands construction goes, which is nice. I wrote some notes, but let me know if you can't read them.
Also, decided to look at painting skin a bit more in depth, so I used a bit of Niklas Jansson, and a bit of Lauren Cannon's skin tutorial. You can find part 1 here

20151025

This is technically a couple of days lumped together, but I didn't draw as much because I got sick.
Anyway, top is a couple head sketches, along with a bit of control drills for myself. The ones labelled 'hand' and 'shoulder' are what I used to draw, respectively.
On the bottom, a couple feet studies. Feet are inching along into the category of "body part I can't draw at all", up there with hands.

Ever Skyward - Pg3

Ever Skyward it is!
I'm gonna go back and adjust the formatting on the other two pages.
Still haven't settled on a style, so don't freak out if it looks different, or if I go back and alter pages.

UPDATE: Reversed middle panel so hopefully it reads better.

20151019

This one is actually a mash of last night and today. Little Hogarth, little Ron Lemen.

Lu Bu

Who's come to destroy us?
Lu Bu!
Lu Bu's come to destroy us!
About 3 hours in Photoshop CS6. I tried to follow Rembrandt's chiaroscuro. Next time, I need to use a bit of green.

Kigurumi Laele

Wife: "You know those adult-sized Pikachu pajamas?"
Me: "Not really."
Wife: "Laele would totally wear those."
Me: "...I think I know what I'm drawing tonight..."

Head studies

I think I found my groove! Somewhere between Andrew Loomis and my awesome teacher, Bryan Lee.
These are done with perspective and form in mind.

Page 3 sketch

Been busy this past week, but I haven't forgotten about this thing. :)
Here's a preview of page 3!

Ever Skyward - Pg2

Here's page 2. You'll notice I'm simplifying the coloring. This is for two reasons: makes the whole thing a lot easier to churn out, and it's an exercise for me on simplifying things and not overrender everything, as I tend to do.
So, this comic I've been working on, I think I've narrowed it down to two names:

Ever Skyward
Through the Skies' Eyes

What do you guys think?

UPDATE:: Ever Skyward it is!

Ever Skyward - Pg1

UPDATE: Ever Skyward it is!
Here's page one of this thing that has not title. I'll go back and add it in as soon as I figure it out!
I have the first chapter planned out, but not drawn. Since I'm still figuring things out, expect the visual to change as I figure out what I'm doing.:)

Hands and some faces

Trying to level up by drawing my mortal enemies, hands. I think I did alright; most of these are from memory.

Test

I've always wanted to do a comic. Maybe it's about time I actually do it.

Game Art HQ/OC Remix FFIX Anniversary Album

Back in January, I did an illustration of Zidane atop the Prima Vista for the Game Art HQ/OCRemix FFIX Anniversary Album. Today, I received notice that my piece was picked to be featured on the trailer for the album. Go check it out.
And check out Game Art HQ for more game-related art.

MTG Playmat commission WIP 1

How's that for a handful of a title?
This is a commission I'm doing of a Magic: The Gathering playmat featuring Angus Mackenzie (or as I like to call him, Goat Jesus).
Keep an eye out for the finished version.

WHO WANTS FISH TACOS

So, in Monster Hunter, they have this weapon that's a frozen swordfish and you use it as a sword (sadly, in game, you swing the fish from the nose). I was playing and using that weapon, then I asked my wife if her character would use a fish as a weapon.
"Oh, yeah, totally. She would scream, 'WHO WANTS FISH TACOS!' before smacking people with it."

Watch out, monsters!

Let The Good Times Roll

I was originally going to name this one "The Thrill Is Gone", but then I remembered, despite being The King of the Blues, BB King was always cheerful, optimistic, and full of energy. Always looking ahead, never looking down. So, instead, I decided to portray him as I remember him: having a good time, doing what he loved doing.
Good night, Riley. We'll miss you.

Mikey sketch

Just a quick sketch, inspired by Bryan Lee's Mikey sketch. :)
Like every other kid, I wanted to be a Ninja Turtle when I grew up. Unlike every other kid, I wanted to be Leonardo.

Oberyn Martell

Pedro Pascal as Oberyn Martell.
I really did not expect this guy to be as hard to paint as he was. Need more practice.
Corel Painter 2015, about 2 hours.

Chrono Trigger - The Final Battle

This was done for the Game-Art-HQ RPG Challenge.
I tried to pay homage to Akira Toriyama's style, using a black outline and sharp colors. I made it in Painter 2015 and Photoshop CS6.
Also, I made a process video!

Torso study

Torso study for tonight, taking after Bryan Lee
I think I made the torso a bit long.
