About Me

Grieverjoe (Jose Alvarez) is NOT a whiny emo as his name would suggest. He's an IT student with a love for art.

Violinist

Done for my PK challenge. This is actually two challenges rolled into one (draw a musical instrument in black and white or values, and draw a weird-looking cartoony guy). Since I was behind, I figured why not draw them both at the same time? It's not every day I get to play around with crazy styling. Fun stuff!
I must be channeling my inner Picasso or something! :D

Eva redesign

I'm currently working on redesigning my characters, since I haven't touched them since my animu days (about 8 years ago). I decided to start with Eva, since she's always been one of my favorites.
This is where I'm at, but then, I realized that her fighting style is very mobile and jumpy (Tai Chi sword fighting style; think Xianghua from Soul Calibur), so a heavier armor probably wouldn't work very well. I need to switch her to a lighter set, though, historically, Generals always wore the most ornate and impressive-looking armors in their armies. This is where my brainstorming session stopped, so if you think of something, lemme know.
For reference, this is what she looked like, when I first conceived her, 8 years ago.

Ned

"One does not simply march into King's Landing."
-Trevelyan
I worked on this one at a constant 30% zoom, which made it really cool when I finally zoomed in all the way at the end. I love the messy/brushy look of it.

Old Pirate

I felt like drawing a pirate, so I went to Google to look for references. Most of the results are pirate captains, followed by the pirate sluts, and the occasional swabby, and it's always the same: captains are rugged, masculine, tough, and heroic; the swabbies always look wimpy, frail, squirrely, and scaredy; and the sluts look like sluts.
So I thought, why not take the archetypal pirate captain and protray him washed-out and clearly past his prime, but do so in a 'heroic' manner, the way they always look?
Here's the result.

Part Green Man, part Spriggan, all not-really-thought-out drawing.

Thildga

Here's a fun exercise, taken from Jandered on Deviantart.

Go to this website, and draw the first description that pops up.
Here's mine:

Thildga: Female Dwarf Peasant, Good. Thildga has messy red hair and brown eyes, and numerous unusual tattoos. She wears travel-stained clothing and several pouches hang from her belt. Thildga is absent-minded and always searching for a missing item.

Loren, dragonslayer

Done for my friend, Astrapho, as a challenge on PK.
Her character, Loren. I don't know if she actually kills dragons or not.

Spawn

One of my favorite comic book characters.
I tried to do something new here, but it didn't turn out quite how I envisioned it. Oh well. One can only learn by trying out new things, right? :)

Sand

The sand people walk in a single-file line to conceal their numbers.
Just a sketch, about 30 minutes in Photoshop.

Head sketch

30-minute random sketch for tonight.
I could've made it better, but it's my turn to take care of the baby. :)
Photoshop CS5, 30 minutes.

Some of my challenges at PK are sometimes awesome.

Sometimes, they're just silly.

Taking a break

"Well, it's official: I'm getting transferred tomorrow."
"I see..."
"You don't sound very excited."
"I am, it's just that... well, I'd kinda hoped we'd get promoted together, you know?"
"It'll be okay. We can still be friends."
"Yeah... but you're getting transferred tomorrow, and..."
"...and?"
"...and you're going to a war zone. I'm afraid I won't see you again."
"It'll be okay."
"Promise?"
"Promise."

First sketch of 2013, done for my awesome buddy, Astrapho, :iconarcturian627: ,as part of my challenge at PK Forums. I tried to emulate her style, as well as try to do more storytelling through the picture itself.
